Estimating a painting job

A painting estimate prices a job by area plus prep and materials. The generator is pre-filled with prep, painting by the square foot, and materials — adjust them for the rooms or exterior.

A painting estimate should state the area and number of coats, separate prep from painting and from paint/materials, and note the paint brand and finish. Mention extras like trim, ceilings or repairs that affect the price.

Quote prep as its own line — it’s often where the labor really goes, and clients undervalue it until it’s itemized. Naming the paint brand and number of coats stops a budget competitor from undercutting you on a worse spec.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate a painting job?

Measure the paintable area in square feet, then price prep, painting (per sq ft or per room) and paint/materials separately, noting the number of coats and finish. The generator pre-fills these lines and an acceptance line — edit them, set a validity date, and download a PDF.

How much does interior painting cost per square foot?

It varies widely by region, prep needed and number of coats — often a few dollars per square foot of floor area, or a lower rate per square foot of wall. Use your own rate in the generator; the point of the estimate is to make prep, labor and materials transparent.

What should an estimate include?

A clear estimate has the word “Estimate” and a unique number, your business and contact info, the client’s name, the date and how long the price is valid, an itemized breakdown of labor and materials with quantities and rates, the subtotal and estimated total, plus terms and a line for the client to accept. The generator includes a field for each.

How long should an estimate be valid?

Thirty days is the common default, which is the tool’s starting value. Setting a clear validity window protects you if material or labor costs rise — after it expires you can re-price the job. The “valid until” date fills in automatically from the date and the validity period you enter.

Is the estimate generator free?

Yes — completely free, with no account, no watermark and no limit. It runs entirely in your browser, so your client and pricing details stay on your device, and your business info is saved locally so you don’t retype it next time.
