For 3, 7, 7, 2, 12, 8 the mean is 6.5, the median is 7, the mode is 7, and the range is 10. The mean is pulled by extreme values, while the median is not — which is why median income is often quoted instead of mean income.

How do I find the mean, median and mode?

The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle ones for an even count). The mode is the value that appears most often. The calculator sorts and computes all three at once, plus the range.

What is the range?

The range is the difference between the largest and smallest value — a quick measure of spread. For 3, 7, 7, 12 the range is 12 − 3 = 9. The calculator reports it alongside the mean, median and mode.

Can a data set have more than one mode?

Yes. A set with two values tied for most frequent is bimodal, and one with several is multimodal; if every value appears once, there is no mode. The calculator lists every value that ties for the highest frequency.
