Average Time Calculator

Find the average of multiple times — enter them as hh:mm:ss or mm:ss and get the mean time, plus the total and count.

How to calculate average time

To average times, you can’t just add the digits — you have to work in a single unit. This calculator converts each entry to seconds, adds them, divides by the count, and converts the result back to hh:mm:ss (or mm:ss). You can mix formats and separate entries with commas or new lines.

average time = (sum of all times in seconds) ÷ (number of times)

For example, three laps of 1:25, 1:31 and 1:28 are 85 + 91 + 88 = 264 seconds. Divided by 3 that is 88 seconds, or 1:28 average. It works for lap and race times, call durations, shift lengths or any list of times.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate average time?

Convert each time to a single unit (seconds), add them up, divide by how many there are, then convert back. For example, 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 (mm:ss) total 360 seconds ÷ 3 = 120 seconds = 2:00 average.

How do I average lap or race times?

Enter each lap as mm:ss (or hh:mm:ss for longer events), one per line or separated by commas. The calculator sums them, divides by the number of laps and shows the average lap time.

How do you find the mean of multiple times?

The mean time is the total of all the times divided by the count. This tool does the seconds conversion for you, so you can mix hh:mm:ss and mm:ss entries and still get an accurate average.
